उत्तर-

हिंदी का पहला समाचार पत्र उदन्त मार्तंड था जो कलकत्ता से 30 मई 1826 को प्रकाशित हुआ था। इसका शाब्दिक अर्थ समाचार सूर्य होता है। इस साप्ताहिक समाचार पत्र को कानपुर निवासी पंडित जुगल किशोर शुक्ल ने शुरू किया था।

इसमें ब्रज और खड़ी बोली का मिश्रित रूप प्रयोग किया गया। यह पुस्तक आकार में हर मंगलवार छपता था। इसमें विभिन्न नगरों के सरकारी क्षेत्रों की विभिन्न गतिविधियाँ प्रकाशित होती थीं। उस समय की वैज्ञानिक खोजों तथा आधुनिक जानकारियों को भी महत्त्व दिया जाता था।

संस्कृत, फारसी, अंग्रेजी और बांग्ला के जानकार जुगल किशोर पहले सदर दीवानी अदालत में प्रोसीडिंग रीडर यानी पेशकारी थे और फिर वकील बन गए। ‘हिंदी और हिंदी समाज’ या ‘हिंदुस्तानियों’ का उत्थान इस अखबार को निकालने का उद्देश्य था। इस अखबार के उद्देश्य के बारे में संपादक ने लिखा था कि अखबार जिस भाषा में छपता है, उसका सुख उस भाषा के जानने और पढ़ने वालों को ही होता है। इसलिए हिंदुस्तानियों को उनकी भाषा में समाचार देने के लिए यह अखबार शुरू किया गया है ताकि लोग अपनी भाषा से जुड़े रहें। एक अन्य जगह लिखा गया कि अज्ञान तथा रूढ़ियों के अंधेरों में जकड़े हिन्दुस्तानी लोगों की प्रतिभाओं पर प्रकाश डालने और ज्ञान के प्रकाशनार्थ इस पत्र का श्री गणेश हुआ है। यह हिन्दुस्तान और नेपाल आदि देशों के लोगों, महाजनों तथा इंग्लैंड के साहबों के बीच वितरित हुआ और हो रहा है।

कोलकाता में हिंदी भाषी पाठकों की कमी, हिंदी भाषी राज्यों में भेजने के लिए डाक की महंगी दरें और सरकारी विभाग द्वारा खरीदारी न करने से यह अखबार डेढ़ साल बाद दिसंबर 1827 में बंद हो गया।

The first Hindi newspaper was 'Udant Martand' which was published from Calcutta on 30 May 1826. Its literal meaning is Samachar Surya. This weekly newspaper was started by Pandit Jugal Kishore Shukla, a resident of Kanpur.

A mixed form of Braj and Khari Boli was used in this. It was printed every Tuesday in book size. In this, various activities of the government areas of different cities were published. Scientific discoveries and modern information of that time were also given importance.

Knowledgeable of Sanskrit, Persian, English and Bengali, Jugal Kishore was first a proceeding reader in Sadar Diwani Adalat and then became a lawyer. The upliftment of 'Hindi and Hindi Samaj' or 'Hindustanis' was the objective of bringing out this paper. Regarding the purpose of this newspaper, the editor had written that the language in which the newspaper is published, its happiness comes only to those who know and read that language. That's why this newspaper has been started to give news to 'Hindustanis' in their own language so that people stay connected with their language.

It has been written at another place that this newspaper has been started to shed light on the talents of the Indian people who are stuck in the darkness of ignorance and stereotypes and to publish knowledge. It has been distributed and is being distributed among the people of Hindustan and Nepal etc. countries, moneylenders and gentlemen of England.

The paper closed down in December 1827 after a year and a half, due to lack of Hindi-speaking readers in Kolkata, high postal rates for sending to Hindi-speaking states, and non-purchase by the government department.
